The rise in divorce rates is causing us to review the potential consequences of this phenomena. The frequency of divorce affects traditional roles not just within the family, but in the work force as well. Americans have begun to change what they mean when they think of the typical family.

Historically, this was not very common phenomenon in the United States until the twentieth century. Despite its existence dating back to years of Roman Empire, many of the cultural norms in the US were tied to religious beliefs, which tended to look down upon couples that decided to legally separate.

More recently, shifts in the workforce have shifted some of the family roles in the US. Up to fifty percent of marriages in the United States involve at least one person who has been married before. In 2008 an approximate of forty percent of marriages ended in divorce

Women working and taking roles outside of the traditional household have been increased in the latter half of the twentieth century. It is not immediately evident whether the participation of women in the labor market created tension in the household that led to separation. It is also possible that the need for more income in the family is to explain for the increased participation of women in the workforce.

With many families traditionally constructed in a two-parent household, the departure of one parent can result in big changes for both the parents and children, if any. Mothers usually get lead custody of children when parents separate, although this is not always the case.

At one time there was a clear delineation of the roles of men and women in the household but now that is not so clear. Some children are doing more chores while they’re still young because their mother is working. This can cause discord in parenting decisions over what is best for the children.

In America, divorce can be expensive and complicated process. It is not at all uncommon for reputable financial advisers to recommend that couples sign a prenuptial agreement. Even as not a idealistic way to start a nuptials, financial planners favor them because they let improved defense of assets in case of separation. Specifically, it can help couples to minimize legal costs and it provides some protection to the spouse with greater wealth.
